To best understand how long the tattoo removal process is at Unthink Inc, we must look at two crucial components—how large the tattoo is and how many sessions it will take to reach complete ink clearance. The average tattoo takes approximately six sessions to clear; however, determining your specific removal timeline requires a consideration of your specific factors.
Before any ink removal takes place, our laser technician Jim , will hold a consultation with you to help determine what size category your tattoo falls into. At Unthink Inc we have found the majority of unwanted tattoos are sized small, medium and large categories. For tattoo removal pricing based on size, visit our pricing page.
Unthink Inc. has a minimum removal price of $150 per treatment session. The time and treatment materials are the same for a pea sized tattoo as they are for an Oreo cookie sized tattoo. A small tattoo is anything up to 2” by 2”, medium is 4” by 4” and large is anything up to 6” by 6”. However, we do understand that tattoos come in all shapes and sizes and are not always completely filled (eg. outlines, text, symbols, etc). In these cases, we measure the amount of ink and condense it into the smallest possible size. Tattoos that far exceed the 6” by 6” size are often broken up into two treatment sessions, which can add time to your overall removal. To get a better estimate of your tattoo removal timeline based on the number of sessions necessary to achieve full ink clearance, a number factors need to be considered:
This is the most pertinent factor understanding approximately in how long your removal process will be. At Unthink Inc., we are able to shorten the amount of necessary sessions with the use of our advanced PicoWay laser. Unlike traditional laser technologies (also known as Q-switched lasers), which work at a pulsation rate measured in nanoseconds (one billionth of a second), PicoWay utilizes picosecond technology and can break up ink particles at a speed of one trillionth of a second. In short, PicoWay is 1,000 times more efficient than any other tattoo removal laser on the market.

The farther your tattoo is from the heart, the longer it may take to fade or be completely remove. Blood circulation is integral to the process of tattoo removal, therefore the closer you are to the heart (where all blood is circulated) the less session you will need. A chest tattoo fades faster than one on your foot.
The older the tattoo, the faster it is to remove. Our bodies tend to absorb ink particles when they have been embedded into the skin for longer periods of time, making their removal relatively quick process.
Q-switched lasers, and others alike, are able to remove darker ink colours such as black and blue, due to their single wavelength function. Fortunately, PicoWay includes the use of three wavelengths, each capable of removing a specific colour range. 532nm removes red, orange and yellow pigments; 785nm for blue and green; and the traditional 1064nm for black and dark blue. Do keep in mind that multi-coloured tattoos may require longer treatment times than those inked with one colour. However, compared to other laser technologies you will still achieve your desired ink clearance much faster.
In addition to ink colours, Q-switched lasers also limited in the range of skin tones they can work with. Those with deeper complexions are advised to steer clear of Q-switched lasers, as the energy can become absorbed by the skin rather than rather than the targeted ink pigment and cause serious injury. Due to PicoWay’s superior speed, darker skin tones can safely and effectively have tattoos with black or dark blue ink removed.
If you are a consistent smoker or suffer from any chronic diseases (such as diabetes), your healing process may take longer. As blood circulation has a significant impact on the healing process, if you are a runner and live a generally healthy lifestyle, chances are your blood circulation will be strong allowing your tattoo to heal quickly and be ready for the next session of laser tattoo removal.
Not all of our clients at Unthink Inc. desire to achieve complete clearance. We also offer fading and altering services to allow you to achieve the look you want. Both of these options may require fewer sessions.
